Understanding Cholesterol

Most of us have heard and learned that there are two types of cholesterol : "good" and "bad" cholesterols. The good guys are known as High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and the bad ones are Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL). Even though we do not like the bad ones, there, however, must be a balance of both the good and the bad ones in our system.

Too much or too low of either one may cause
problem to the health of your heart.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is an important agent needed during the formation of vital body hormones as well as cell membranes. Cholesterol is also involved in substance transportation in and out of cells, inter-cell communication as well as regulating many other body metabolisms too. Cholesterol is found abundantly in our blood stream and other body cells as the unique waxy and soft fat-like substance.

Where does Cholesterol come from?

There are two sources : food and body. About a quarter of our body cholesterols come from the food we eat. Our liver and other body cells manufacture the rest of our cholesterols. Our body is capable of forming both good and bad cholesterols and this is a condition known as hypercholesterolemia.

Why LDL is known as Bad Cholesterol?

Generally, bad cholesterols or LDL are the culprit that clogs our arteries. This causes a medical condition known as atherosclerosis which is the forming of a layer of plaque in our blood vessels. The passage way for blood flow becomes restricted and ultimately, the heart needs more effort or pressure to pump and get the blood through. If the person continues the unhealthy eating habit of food high in saturated fat and cholesterol, he or she would most likely become the next victim of coronary heart diseases. Lifestyle modification is crucial, especially if any of your family has a history of hypercholesterolemia.

How do I know my Cholesterol Level?

There is a test you can do at most clinic here in Malaysia and other countries as well call fasting "lipoprotein profile" All you need to do is to fast for about eight to twelve hours without food, liquid or pills. This test, "lipoprotein profile" gives you quite an accurate information of your total cholesterols, LDL and HDL cholesterols and triglycerides.

It is also highly recommended for every adult to have at least one health screening done every five years. However, your doctor needs to assess other risk factors to have more definite information on your risk or cardiovascular diseases.

Don't Touch That!

I know one thing for sure and that is, if you have pimple or acnes, DO NOT touch it!

Don't touch it and don't play with it no matter how tempted you are because believe me, I know it can be tempting. There's good reason for it too.. It can cause unsightly scar that would in turn cause unnecessary heart pain each time you look at yourself in the mirror. Invest instead in a good blemish acne cream that would not only clear up the trouble spot but also ensure a nice clean face and every woman wants that right?

SPF and PA?

Summer is here! And although that means it's extremely hot for me. It also means getting a tan for many. So I was thought this might be useful information as I myself was a bit blur about it...

What is the difference between SPF and PA?

Well the SPF number helps you figure out how long you can be in the sun before burning, which is caused by UVB rays. So if you usually burn after 10minutes and you have an SPF25 sunscreen, you can stay in the sun 25 times longer without burning which is 250minutes.

PA is the Japanese unit of measurement for UVA protection. The PA rating is usually followed by "+" signs - so the more pluses, the higher level of UVA protection.

Ulcer No More

If you read my personal blog over at LJL, I've blogged about how I've had massive ulcer in my mouth from last week. I refused to use Bonjella as I found it only gave me relief for up to 15minutes and then the pain would come on again. A lot of of friends who commented suggested putting salt on the wound (holy cow!), gargling with salt water and Listerine and Farah suggested Oral Aid. Azwaj suggested trying other medicine but I refused as well saying that it would take a few more days and this torture would be over.

However I relented today after seeing how dry even my lips have become because I don't even wet my lips anymore and I even stop eating and drinking because of the pain.

So we went to the pharmacy today and asked for Oral Aid like what Farah suggested but since they don't have that in stock, ended up with another alternative called Solcoseryl Dental Adhesive Paste instead. Ladies, am I glad I got it coz now the pain is 70% gone and I can talk properly again.. lolzz!!

Gingko Goodness

I was going through a heath magazine and it was highlighting this Gingko supplement. It stated that Gingko improves the delivery of nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. It also alleviates problems related to memory, ringing in the ears, cold hands and feet (of which I am famous for), dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, muscle aches and joint stiffness, shortness of breath and water retention.

This really sounds interesting but have yet to hear anyone talked about it. Anyone knows??

I've always heard of the benefits of taking Evening Primrose for ladies but have never really been convinced of how effective it is. So, when a friend of mine told me that her menstrual cramps disappear after taking it for 2 months, I decided now is a good time to try as any.

Anyway, according to some experts these are the benefits of taking Evening Primrose regularly:
  1. Regulate irregular period
  2. Relieve PMS (irritability, breast tenderness, bloating, abdominal cramps, water retention)
  3. Reduce menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, sleeping problems)
  4. Relieve eczema (reduce scaliness, redness, dryness and roughness)
  5. Improve cracked heels
  6. Reduce dry skin, find lines and wrinkles
  7. Repair dry, damaged hair and eliminates dandruff
  8. Strengthen brittle, flaking nails
  9. Alleviate stiffness and joint pains

I just returned from my Singapore trip recently to bring my mom for her first ever mammogram. She was as scared as any woman might be when going through something so new and especially after hearing that it was going to be painful and that it was going to hurt when they pressed the equipment and so on and so forth. However, after going through the procedure herself, she was telling me herself, how it DID NOT hurt all all. Bravo Emak!

So how apt is it that I was tagged by sweet smelling Mariuca from Mariuca's Perfume Gallery to help spread the awareness on the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ month of June. Please help convey the importance of regular examination and early detection of breast cancer in order to catch this disease when it first erupts, maximizing the chance of survival and recovery. So in doing my bit to help spread awareness on the issue of breast cancer to women, here are several facts on breast cancer that everyone should know about.
  • The first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a woman's mammogram before it can be felt or any other symptoms are present.
  • Risks for breast cancer include a family history, atypical hyperplasia, delaying pregnancy until after age 30 or never becoming pregnant, early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), current use or use in the last ten years of oral contraceptives, and daily consumption of alcohol.
  • Early detection of breast cancer, through monthly breast self-exam and particularly yearly mammography after age 40, offers the best chance for survival.
  • Ninety-six percent of women who find and treat breast cancer early will be cancer-free after five years.
  • Over eighty percent of breast lumps are not cancerous, but benign such as fibrocystic breast disease.
  • You are ever too young to develop breast cancer! Breast Self-Exam should begin by the age of twenty.

You can help the lives of many women by spreading the word about The Breast Cancer Site pink button as many times as you can. If The Breast Cancer Site receives 8 million clicks on the pink button in June, their premier sponsor -Bare Necessities- will donate $10,000 for more free mammograms. CLICK the pink button today!

The Breast Cancer Site

I like to pass this on to whoever is interested in creating awareness of this worthy cause. Thank you in advance :)

Diabetes

I was at our local pharmacy today and saw this little booklet on "Managing Diabetes". Seeing how my own family members have, unfortunately, contracted this disease, I decided to highlight certain items here for mine as well as your reference. I hope it helps everyone smile.

Diabetes: What you need to know

For our bodies to work properly, we need to convert sugar into energy. A hormone called insulin is essential for the conversion of sugar (glucose) into energy. With diabetes, insulin is no longer produced in sufficient amounts by the body, or the insulin produced is not working properly.

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. According to the Ministry of Health, diabetes is becoming a common disease and a major concern to healthcare professionals here in Malaysia.

More and more diabetic patients are being admitted into government hospitals. There were 21,872 admissions in 1995; this increased by 80 percent in 2004 (39,358 admissions).

What are the tell-tale signs?

The symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes (which can exist simultaneously) are:
  • Being constantly tired
  • Feeling extremely thirsty
  • Passing more urine than normal
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Itching of the skin or genital area
  • Slow healing of infections
  • Numbness and tingling at the hands or feet
These symptoms can develop suddenly or gradually. If you experience any of these, see your doctor, who can test you for diabetes.

I'll continue with the Q&A in tomorrow's post.

I am happy to report that even with all the late nights binges of cheesecakes, chocolates and ice-cream and then Nasi Lemak for breakfast, my weight has officially remained at what it always was (yeah I went on that dreaded weighing machine this morning)! Though I am like 3kgs off the ideal weight for my height, I don't think I'll be needing that Phentermine 37.5 mg diet pill for now! Phew! What a relief!

When was yours?

If memory serves me right, I had my hepatitis A,B and C jabs back in 1998 which is like 10 years ago. I'm not sure if I have to get a booster jab or anything. I hate needles so the less I see and have the need to have one poked into me, the better.

Anyone knows if I need to get one soon?

Oh Health Insurance..

I was thinking. Is there any type of health insurance that covers maternity cost? I mean a C-section can easily cost RM7,000 over here in Malaysia and my gynae did say that due to my fibroid removal surgery, I would most probably have to go through one, if I get pregnant that is.

I mean it always helps to be prepared mentally, physically, emotionally and financially right?

Re-hydrate Yourself

Wake up by drinking water.Do you feel very thirsty when you wake up in the morning? That is because you are dehydrated from going 6-9 hours without any liquids. So drink water in the morning to wake up.

Before you leave for work, or before you eat breakfast, drink a full glass of cool (not cold) water. It will hydrate you, wake you up, and even make you a little fuller so you will not feel the need to eat as large a breakfast. Some people even find they no longer need coffee when they drink a glass of water in the morning.

Sleepless Munching Me

I noticed that ever since I've been blogging, my sleeping hours have been very erratic. In fact, I have started to consider sleeping a total waste of time - which is totally not me! I used to love sleeping and in fact would be very upset if my beauty sleep was disturbed for no apparent reason. And because I used to work late into the nights, weekends are a must for catchup sleep, if there was ever such a term..lolzz..

But now.... now I don't like sleeping. I'm not insomniac or anything. I can sleep if I wanted to - it's just that I don't - want to sleep, I mean. I would only sleep when I'm really sleepy and the moment I'm awaken, I don't even "loiter" on the bed anymore. It's straight up, housework and blogging! I really need to enroll myself in blogger anonymous or something soon..heheh..

Anyway, I was looking back at my old entries on "What makes you fat" and I realised that if i continue with this pattern of life which consist of little sleep and lots of after midnight munchies, I seriously need to invest in a home gym equipment to keep the fat at bay. What do you think??

Mangosteen Goodness

I was chatting with a friend today who was promoting a health supplement that contained primarily mangosteen. What tweaked my interest was because it seems mangosteen is really good to control allergies and sinus conditions. His son who was having problems with his sinus had not had any attack since taking this health supplement. His wife's migraines had also seemed to disappear!

Biotivia Bio Quench also had mangosteen as one of their ingredients. It's also made up of other anti-oxidant ingredients like extract from apple skin, goji berry, pomegranate and grape seed. Perhaps I should give this product a try. After all if it gets rid or even control this allergies, it is worth a try :)

Uterine Rupture

The last time I saw my gynae, she told me that if I was pregnant, chances are I would give birth via c-section. I did not ask any further because I thought I would cross that bridge when I get to it.

Then the other day, a blogger friend of mine who also happened to be doctor wrote about her day at her clinic about a pregnant woman who's husband was too busy to send her to the clinic although she was specifically told to come for checkup for the high blood pressure..

Anyway, because of that I asked Nat, my blogger doctor, about what my gynae told me and Nat stated that is in fact risky for me (if I was pregnant) to try for natural birth after my fibroid surgery for fear of a condition called uterine rupture.

Uterine rupture is considered an obstetrics emergency and not to be taken lightly. I then surfed around and found this story which totally changed the way I think..

I am definitely going for that c-section if ever I get pregnant. Period!

The most common type of UTI is known as cystitis (inflammation of the bladder). It has been estimated that one third of women experience the symptoms of cystitis at some point in their life.

What are its symptoms?

When you have UTI, the bladder and the lining of the urethra become red and inflamed. Common symptoms related to UTI's may include
  1. A burning sensation or lower abdominal discomfort when you pass urine
  2. Needing to urinate urgently
  3. Passing urine much more frequently than usual
  4. "Leaking" urine
  5. Feeling an urge to urinate, but being unable to or only passing a few drops
  6. Foul smelling urine
  7. Urine that is cloudy, bloody or dark
  8. Having a temperate
You can do your part to prevent UTIs by:
  1. Drinking lots of water
  2. Urinating as soon as you feel the need - don't hold it
  3. Make sure you have adequate lubrication during sex, and urinate after having sex
  4. Take vitamin C or cranberry juice - they are said to be urinary antiseptics
  5. Keep you intimate area clean and dry because dampness promotes bacterial growth. Try using pantyliners with anti-bacterial properties
  6. Cleanse your intimate area daily with a mild and PH-balance solution
